ADHD Drugs Send Thousands to the Hospital Each Year
According to a national report, nearly 8,000 youth went to the emergency department in 2004 because of stimulant medications. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a report from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) stating that an estimated 7,873 emergency department visits in 2004 were the result of two stimulant drugs given to young people to treat controversial ADHD symptoms. The most frequent reason for these visits was non-medical use (48%), followed by adverse reactions associated with the medication as prescribed (34%), accidental ingestion (10%), and suicide attempts (8%). The incidents involved methylphenidate (marketed as Ritalin® or Concerta®) or amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (marketed as Adderall®), two highly addictive stimulant drugs. Assistant Surgeon General Eric Broderick said in a recent SAMHSA release, “These findings suggest an alarming level of non-medical use that could have life-threatening consequences, such as heart attack or stroke.” Earlier this year an advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggested adding a strict warning for the stimulants indicating the increased potential for heart problems. In May of 2000, a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) representative gave sworn testimony to a Congressional committee stating that, “neither animals nor humans can tell the difference between cocaine, amphetamine, or methylphenidate when they are administered the same way at comparable doses. In short, they produce effects that are nearly identical.” Reports such as this support the message that people must become more educated as to what drugs do to a person’s mind and body, and what the potential harmful effects and risks are to those taking them.
