Survey Shows a High Percentage of Drug Users Not Getting the Help They Need

The most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that more than 23 million Americans aged 12 and older were in need of some type of substance abuse treatment, but less than 4 million people actually received any help. Of those people, more than half attended a self-help group and 1.5 million people went to outpatient treatment. Only 1.1 million people enrolled in a residential rehabilitation facility.

So why did more than 19 million substance abusers not get help? Those reasons can vary. It may have to do with finances or bed availability. Some go to jail or prison and don’t get any treatment. Others have a negative viewpoint about treatment because they’ve tried it before unsuccessfully. Most of them just aren’t ready to receive any help at all.

While some experts claim that if addicts are not ready then you can’t help them, this only holds true to a certain degree. You don’t have to allow someone to hit “rock bottom,” because that might be a long-term prison sentence or death. Often some type of intervention can be done to motivate the addict to seek help, which starts bringing the “bottom” up to them.

Examples of this could be a family, law enforcement or judicial intervention or simply the right person educating them about what’s truly going on with them to help bring a greater understanding to the situation. It’s also about finding the correct solution to the problem and getting them into a successful drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation program.

Getting someone to agree to go into a treatment program can be a life changing event. And there are many great resources out there that can help someone to overcome an addiction permanently.
